Leaving
by Ivan Fischer
Measure out the flour carefully, a teaspoon of salt,
One egg. Peel back the paper from the stick of butter.
Make her recipe precisely.
In the living room tea is set for two.
Someone could stop by; always prepare for company.
Don’t let anyone rearrange the fridge magnets, and
Even though the shopping’s done, don’t throw out the list.
All the carnations in the vase dried up; change the water anyways.
Dust coats the furniture and picture frames in her room. Go in and tidy up.
